How Do You Know When It’s Time for New Tires?

Unless you have had the unfortunate experience of a flat tire, your tires are probably something you don’t think about often. However, for the safety of your car, it’s important to know the signs that it’s time for a new set of tires.

Exposure to Elements

Consider that where you park your car every day contributes to the condition of your tires. For example, if you park in your driveway and your tires are exposed to snow, rain, heat, etc. throughout the year, they wear down more quickly than tires on a car parked in a garage. The weather elements can cause structural damage to tires that may be more difficult to detect than other forms of damage.

Tread Wear

For checking the wear and tear on your tires, there’s an easy test! Take a penny and place it “head first” in multiple grooves around the tire. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head every time, it means your tire treads are pretty worn and it’s time for a new set of wheels. If Lincoln’s head is always covered by the treads, you’re in good shape and do not need new tires yet.

Tire Age

Regardless of the wear your tires have undergone, it is still recommended by car and tire manufacturers to replace your tires every 6 to 10 years. For your specific tires, you can always check your tire manufacturer’s recommendation.

To err on the side of caution, have a professional check your tires every year after 5 years of use and let them make the call. Proper care can help your tires last longer. This means keeping them at the correct pressure level and performing regular tire rotations.
