Protecting Your Car in Cold Weather

As the temperatures continue to decrease in the state of Tennessee and across the country, caring for your car will become increasingly important. It’s a known fact that cars don’t function as well in cold weather. There are several areas of your car to take special care of with frigid temperatures in the forecast.

Wipers:

Visibility is even more important when driving in winter weather. If your wipers have been average with snow, they will worsen when the temperature drops and everything begins to freeze. The good news it that windshield wipers are inexpensive and easy to replace from your own driveway.

Battery:

Consider changing your car battery. It is recommended that you do this every 3 to 5 years depending on how often you drive. A new battery can ensure that you won’t face battery issues on the road when it’s freezing or snowing outside. Whether you decide to replace your battery or not, be sure to check your battery for any corrosion and make sure you’re in the clear before the next time you drive in winter weather.

Fluids:

Check your wiper fluid, antifreeze, and oil levels/conditions. Replace your wiper fluid with a winter blend wiper fluid. This will make your wiper fluid less likely to freeze. This is especially important if you park your car outdoors overnight. Fill your antifreeze and be your oil level is sufficient.

Tires:

Tire pressure can be greatly affected by the weather. A 10-degree temperature change can cause tire pressures to lower up to 10 percent in air. This means your tire pressure can change overnight, especially when temperatures are constantly up and down the way they have been recently. To check the optimal tire pressure for your vehicle, look for the label inside the driver’s side door or in the owner’s manual.
